He was responsible for the creation of the Crystallography Laboratory in Pittsburgh, President of the American Association of Crystallography, and co-editor of the Acta Crystallographica. He was awarded the Hudson Award of the American Chemical Society, the Buerger Award of the American Crystallographic Association, and the Haworth Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry of the United Kingdom.
