Conferência em Neurociências - Levels of Emotional Awareness: Normative and Clinical Applications

Richard D. Lane, MD PhD
Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience
University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ USA

Having emotional responses is an inherent human attribute but knowing what you are feeling is an acquired skill. The Levels of Emotional Awareness framework posits that the ability to experience and express emotion in a complex and differentiated way is a cognitive skill that develops over time. Variations in evelopment result in individual differences in this ability among adults. This talk will review the theoretical underpinnings of this model and the evolving methods for measuring emotional awareness. A brain model will be presented highlighting the importance of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex in mentalization and how it dovetails with an emerging understanding of the neural basis of mind-brain-body interactions mediated by the medial visceromotor network. Evidence will be presented that greater emotional awareness is associated with a greater ability to recognize emotions in others, regulate one’s own emotions and have more satisfying relationships. Clinical studies will be reviewed indicating that lower emotional awareness is associated with a variety of psychiatric disorders (e.g. borderline personality disorder, PTSD, eating disorders and somatoform disorders) as well as poorer physical health (essential hypertension and pain). Discussion will focus on the implications of this model for emotion research and clinical methods for improving emotional awareness.
