António Cruz Serra is an indispensable reference for the University of Lisbon and the Portuguese Higher Education. During the first phase of his career, he was a professor and researcher at  and was President of the same institution between 2009 and 2012. He would later become Rector of the Technical University of Lisbon, where he played a fundamental role in the process of merging Lisbon’s two major public universities — The University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon —, and was its first Rector between 2013 and 2021.

In addition to the successful merger of the largest Portuguese higher education institution, which brings together 18 Schools and an academic community of around 60,000 people, António Cruz Serra played a key role in harmonizing the new University and promoting the institution at a national and international level.

He strengthened the University's scientific leadership through the establishment of the Colleges and Interdisciplinary Thematic Networks, as well as reinforced innovation and entrepreneurship through the creation of the º£½Ç´óÉñ Incubator.

António Cruz Serra brought to the public agenda the difficulties of accommodation experienced by the student community, initiating the process that led to the implementation of the plan to build residences, currently underway at the University of Lisbon.

He also valued the heritage of the University of Lisbon, with emphasis on the requalification of the and the Pavilion of Portugal, and the construction of the Reynaldo dos Santos Building. 

The event was attended by Luís Ferreira, Rector of the University of Lisbon, Rogério Colaço, President of the IST Técnico Lisboa, Leonor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation, José Marques dos Santos, former Rector of the University of Porto, and Pedro Silva Girão, Vice-President of the ULisboa School, Shanghai University.

All the speeches reiterated the managerial qualities, the vocation for Science and Innovation and the persistence that characterised António Cruz Serra's career.
