MUHNAC team publishes review of zoological collections resulting from campaigns in former colonies

These collections are currently preserved at the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon (MUHNAC). The study, titled , highlights the historical and scientific importance of these expeditions and emphasises MUHNAC's crucial role in conserving this valuable heritage. The campaigns, organised by the Marine Biology Mission and its successor institutions, aimed to systematically study marine resources in the former Portuguese colonies, with a particular focus on Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique, and resulted in the collection of thousands of specimens of marine fauna, including fish, molluscs and crustaceans. The collection under analysis includes 7,305 occurrences and more than 30,000 specimens, representing more than 1,000 species, including type specimens of several new species
As part of this work, the collection's data has been scanned and is now available for consultation on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), .
