The University of Lisbon once again stands out in the field of entrepreneurship: the 2025 edition of the “Ranking of Entrepreneurial Universities in Portugal” awards ULisboa first place in the national ranking.
ULisboa ranks first in Startup Portugal's Entrepreneurial Universities Ranking
This “Ranking of Entrepreneurial Universities,” based on metrics of entrepreneurship and innovation capacity in higher education institutions, was announced by at the session “Ranking the Universities – How can academia boost this Ecosystem?”, which took place on Tuesday, November 11th, at the Web Summit in Lisbon.
The session featured a brief discussion on how academia can help transform research projects and bring academic knowledge to the economy. The goal was to highlight how these initiatives can give rise to new businesses more closely linked to the start-up ecosystem, from the way they organize and use data to the promotion of entrepreneurship as a career path.
This distinction is in line with the results of the ULisboa Startup Impact Report 2025, produced in collaboration with Dealroom, and highlights the institution's impact on the national ecosystem. According to the study, there are already more than 1,000 startups launched by ULisboa students and alumni, with an aggregate valuation of over €24 billion, present in more than 40 countries and having raised more than €850 million in venture capital since 2024 alone.
Four of the six national unicorns emerge from the universe of startups with ULisboa DNA, namely: , , and . Startups founded by ULisboa alumni also include potential unicorns such as Cambrian, , Distalmotion, and , as well as rising stars, i.e., companies valued at over €200 million, such as , Stake, , and .
“This recognition reflects ULisboa’s commitment to promoting entrepreneurship, innovation and knowledge transfer to society. It is a result that belongs to our entire academic community,” emphasises Francisco Correia dos Santos, Vice-Rector of ULisboa.
For all these reasons, ULisboa is now the most entrepreneurial university in Portugal.
Facilities such as the Técnico Innovation Center, Tec Labs, and ULisboa's Center for Technology Transfer and Knowledge Valorization, combined with acceleration programs, open innovation, and interdisciplinary networks, can help transform research projects and transfer scientific knowledge to the market, thereby impacting the national economy.
