The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) has just achieved a historic milestone by being ranked 32nd in Europe in the European Spinouts Report 2025, compiled by Dealroom.co. The University of Lisbon also stands out in the Robotics sector, ranking among the top three European institutions in terms of the value created by its spinouts in this area.
University of Lisbon among the best in Europe in the European Spinouts Report 2025
With this result, ULisboa ranks as the top university in Southern Europe and one of only three institutions in Southern Europe to make the top 50. It also surpasses other leading universities in the region, such as the Polytechnic University of Milan (#45). In national terms, ULisboa clearly stands out from the rest, with the only other higher education institution mentioned being the University of Coimbra in 50th place.
The ranking evaluates universities based on multiple criteria, including: venture capital-backed spinouts, spinouts since 2022, spinouts that have attracted more than $10 million, unicorns, venture capital funding raised, and the combined total market value of spinouts. The ranking features a robust and transparent methodology, minimising confirmation biases and incorporating direct contributions from ministries, government agencies and the universities themselves.
For Cecília Rodrigues, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at ULisboa, “universities are centres of scientific discovery and drivers of economic development. ULisboa continues to transform excellent research into innovation and impact. The dynamism of our spinouts demonstrates the economic potential of science, beyond its social value, but to maximise this, it is essential to strengthen public and private funding.”
This positioning reflects the results of the ULisboa Startup Impact Report 2025, according to which, to date, more than 170 spinouts have been created, and more than 130 of these are located in Lisbon, representing around 75% of all spinouts in the city. This highlights ULisboa's central role in translating research into new businesses, creating value from the research carried out at the university. It also reaffirms ULisboa's role as one of the most dynamic university ecosystems in science-based entrepreneurship in Europe, contributing increasingly to the generation of applied knowledge, technological innovation and economic impact.
