Vitor Cardoso Awarded 2023 University of Lisbon Prize

The award ceremony took place February 3rd, 2025, in the Great Hall of the University of Lisbon’s Rectory.

The University of Lisbon has awarded Professor Vitor Cardoso with the 2023 University of Lisbon prize, acknowledging his extraordinary contributions to the development of theoretical physics and to the progress of science at a global level.

The University of Lisbon Prize, created with the support of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, annually honours notable persons who contribute significantly to the advancement of science and culture, and to the broadcasting of Portugal's name internationally. The jury of the award highlighted the importance of Vítor Cardoso's work, which has a high international profile and transcends the boundaries of the Academy. With his groundbreaking work, Cardoso distinguishes himself as an inspiring example of innovation, leadership and dedication to scientific knowledge, motivating and influencing future generations of scientists.

Vítor Cardoso, Full and Distinguished Professor at the Physics Department at , also works as a Full Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. At the Niels Bohr Institute, Vítor Cardoso holds the position of Villum Investigator, which underlines his outstanding position on the international scientific scene and positions him as one of the great scientists of our time in the field of relativity and gravitation. With a career marked by innovation and scientific leadership, In 2022, Vítor Cardoso created the Center of Gravity. It is a centre of excellence in Denmark dedicated to research into black holes with 8 million euros in funding. 

The award ceremony was attended by Luís Ferreira, President of the University of Lisbon, Paulo Macedo, member of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos’ Executive Committee, and Francisco Lobo, Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, who highlighted the importance of Vítor Cardoso's contribution to the advancement of science and the international broadcasting of Portuguese research.
