ULisboa Doctoral Programme in Planetary Health Launches with Open Conference at the Portugal Pavilion
This programme aims to train researchers and leaders capable of addressing the complex intersections between human health, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Grounded in interdisciplinary research, education, and community engagement, it prepares doctoral students to develop innovative solutions to today’s planetary health challenges.
This initiative positions the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) at the forefront of planetary health studies, both in Portugal and internationally.

Renzo R. Guinto will explore the urgent intersections of human and planet health, highlighting how climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequities impact well-being. Drawing on his work in climate-resilient health systems, mental health, migration, and ethical governance, he will discuss innovative approaches to protect both people and the planet. The talk will showcase strategies for education, policy, and practice that empower communities and health systems to respond to planetary challenges, emphasizing the role of research, collaboration, and leadership in building a sustainable, healthy future for all.

Target audience: students of the Doctoral Programme in Planetary Health, the face-to-face session is based on UN () scientific work, offering a participatory experience that raises climate awareness in a rigorous and neutral way.
It is an opportunity to reflect, engage, and take meaningful action in addressing one of today’s most pressing global challenges.

Short Bio
Renzo R. Guinto, MD DrPH, is Associate Professor of Global and Planetary Health and Lead of the Planetary Health Initiative at SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute, Singapore. A pioneer in planetary health and Southeast Asia’s leading “pracademic” on climate and health, he focuses on climate-resilient health systems, mental health, migration, ethics, governance, and health education.
He is Senior Honorary Visiting Fellow at Cambridge, convener of Planetary Health Philippines, and former Director of the Planetary and Global Health Program at St. Luke’s College of Medicine. He serves on the Philippine Climate Change Commission, WHO advisory groups, Lancet Commissions, and editorial boards.
An Obama Foundation Asia-Pacific Leader and Aspen Institute New Voices Fellow, he holds an MD (Philippines) and DrPH (Harvard) and has trained at Oxford, LSHTM, Copenhagen, and Karolinska. He has published 200+ articles, lectured globally, and received multiple honors including TOYM Philippines (2022) and Japan’s Kiyoshi Kurokawa Award (2025).
