ULisboa has 419 researchers amongst the most influential in the world

The latest edition of the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2025 Ranking, by Stanford University (USA) and publisher Elsevier, has been published.

One of the main goals of scientific research is to produce and disseminate knowledge with academic and social impact. In order to understand the impact and relevance of scientific output over time, Stanford University has developed methodologies that allow for a more comprehensive and accurate analysis of the influence of researchers in their fields, considering factors such as collaborations, authorship position, and peer citations.

As in previous years, the latest data allows us to track the evolution of scientific impact over the course of a career and also in the year 2024, reflecting the contribution of more than 230,000 researchers by 2023 and more than 236,000 in the following year.

In this edition, 22 scientific areas and 174 disciplines were considered, according to the standard classification of Science-Metrix. Portugal has 711 scientists in the ranking for impact throughout their careers and 984 in the 2024 ranking, broken down by Research Centers and Higher Education Institutions.

In the 2025 edition, ULisboa stands out with 205 researchers recognized among the most influential in their careers, covering 16 scientific areas and integrating 28 research centers, faculties, and institutes of ULisboa. In terms of scientific impact in 2024, 214 researchers from ULisboa were recognized, covering 17 scientific areas and belonging to 29 centers and organic units of the university.

With these results, ULisboa strengthens its position in the national research landscape, representing 29% of researchers with impact throughout their careers and 22% of those who stood out most in 2024 in the global list of the top 2% most cited.
