ULisboa’s Faculty of Medicine Day 2025

The ceremony celebrating the Faculty of Medicine Day took place at the João Lobo Antunes Grand Auditorium. This event was part of the commemorative calendar of the institution's 200th anniversary and brought together students, teachers, researchers and FMUL staff.

The ceremony aimed to celebrate the commitment of the University of Lisbon's Faculty of Medicine (FMUL) to excellence in medical education by publicly recognising the outstanding contributions of its academic community. João Eurico Cabral da Fonseca, FMUL’s director, kicked off the event with a contextualisation of the Faculty's values, mission and history.

"We think about the celebrations throughout the year, bringing to light various aspects. The faculty nurtures, protects, encourages, supports," he emphasised.

Simão Ribeiro, â€˜s President, was also invited to speak and emphasised the "symbolism" of the celebration. "This Faculty Day has always been an important milestone for us as students because I believe that we are in an environment that only grows if we all work in the same direction," he concluded.

The session continued with a thank you from Maria Manuel Mota, the President of the (GIMM).  "This date is always very important because it's the day we celebrate each other as a community," she emphasised.

Rui Tato Marinho, clinical director for healthcare at  (ULSSM), recalled his career at the hospital and highlighted the joint doctoral programme between FMUL and ULSSM, "a project to stop and have time to write," he said.

Luís Ferreira, the University of Lisbon’s Rector, closed the opening session by stating that the "institution thrives on courage without fearing failure, correcting mistakes in order to move forward and improve".

The event was followed by a speech by Victor Oliveira from the book Art and History at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Medicine, revolving around the themes of the evolution of health in Portugal and the history of FMUL.

This ceremony reaffirmed FMUL's historic and current role in medical education in Portugal, and was a clear demonstration of the value of merit, dedication and commitment to excellence in medical education at a national level.
